Music has been an essential aspect of German culture for centuries, and its strongly ingrained into the national identity and cultural heritage. From the classical masterpieces of Mozart and Bach to the modern tunes of Kraftwerk, Germany has long been known for music.

Germany is the home of experimental and trendy music, and the birthplace of many influential acts. People tend to think of the rhythm and energy of house, techno, and dance music when they think of modern German music, but the country's extensive catalog of music is truly diverse. Origins

The modern style of German music can be traced to the turn of the century when genres like industrial, electronics and Synthpop began to emerge. Electronic music has come to define modern German music, from classic synthwave to the more contemporary EDM. Genres such as dubstep, techno, and trap have big followings in Germany and many artists from the country have excelled in the genre. For example, Klaus Schulze, who is a leader of the German electronic music scene, has been producing influential tracks for over 50 years.

Popular Artists

German music is full of talent, and the modern revolution of German electronic music has given rise to many popular artists. Among them, Robin Schulz, who has won two Echo awards, is a popular name in EDM. After rising to mainstream with “Waves” (feat. Mr. Probz), Schulz has gone on to reach success with “Prayer in C,” “Sun Goes Down” and other chart-topping hits. Another popular artist is Boys Noize, whose real name is Alexander Ridha. Boys Noize earned the award for Best Digital DJ at the 2008 Dancestar Awards and has since released multiple albums to critical acclaim.

German Pop Act

The “Queen of Teutonic Pop” Nena is a popular 80’s artist who released “99 Luftballons” in 1982, which quickly became an international hit. Nena’s time as a pop idol on both sides of the Atlantic saw the success of other songs such as “Leuchtturm” and the English version of “99 Luftballons,” “99 Red Balloons.” In the 2000s, teen-pop, dance-pop and even hip-hop found success in Nena’s homeland. The scene was popularized by the likes of Wir sind Helden, Juli, and Monrose; all of whom achieved multi-platinum status.

Finally, the number of music festivals across Germany is remarkable and an extremely popular destination for electronic music lovers around the world. Festivals such as the Melt!, Sonne Mond Sterne, Lowlands, and Nuke Festival are just a few of the most popular choices among global crowds. Contemporary German music has a big following, and every year more and more music enthusiasts make their way to Germany to experience some of the world's best music from street performers to premier festivals.

Germany is home to a rich, vibrant music culture, which continues to grow and evolve with new genres and performers. Contemporary German music is something that has to be experienced to be understood, but whatever you end up listening to, we are sure you will appreciate the influences of the country’s musical past.
